Chaffey College and the Wignall Museum are pleased to presen t Alphabet: An Exhibition of Hand-Drawn Lettering &\; Experimental Typog raphy and Sky Burchard: It’s Dangerous to Go Alone from August 24 – Septemb er 26\, 2009\, with a reception on September 9\, 6-8pm. Sky Burchard will g ive a talk about his work on Monday\, September 14\, 2009\, from 12:30 – 1: 30pm.

Post Typography asked each of the 47 artists and designers in Alphabet: An Exhibition of Hand-Drawn Lettering &\; Experimental Typ ography to present their alphabets removed from the context of words and ty pography\, therefore focusing on the shapes as an end. The 60 alphabets in this exhibition (all received through an international open call) are shown dissected into their base elements – A through Z – freeing the artists and designers from the confines of legibility. At the same time\, they were ch allenged to expand the experiment into a complete system that goes beyond a short headline\, the realm to which such experimentation is usually relega ted.

In It’s Dangerous to Go Alone\, LA-based artist Sky Burcha rd will focus on the game The Legend of Zelda and the lone explorer “Link” and the weapons and tools he collects along his journey. In this exhibition \, the viewer is allowed to enter into the video screen and is confronted w ith the formal issues inherent in the process of translating the pixilated two-dimensional representations in Zelda into physical objects. In this pro cess\, Burchard remains faithful to the representational system of the game and consequently the objects become abstracted as they depart from the con ventional rules of three-dimensional representation. By delving into the wo rld of games\, It’s Dangerous to Go Alone also raises questions about the w ays technology and fantasy can both supplement and replace social interacti on and intimacy\; the world of fantasy parallels Link's journey\, where the process of becoming the hero supersedes the final goal\, leaving the explo rer perpetually alone on the journey.

Events and exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Park in the North Parking Lot - Pe rmits can be purchased at vending machines for $2.
