The Sun Gallery in Hayward is pleased to announce its next exhibition:
“A New Beginning – Day of the Dead Celebration!"
Scholars trace the origins of today’s modern Day of the Dead holiday back
hundreds of years to Meso-American and pre-Columbian civilizations. Rituals
celebrating the deaths of ancestors were observed by these civilizations for 2,500–3,000
years. One Meso-American civilization, the Aztecs, had a festival dedicated to the
goddess Mictecacihuatl, Queen of the underworld, ruler of the afterlife. Like the other
Meso-American civilizations, the Aztecs kept skulls as trophies and displayed them
during the ritual. The skulls were used to symbolize death and rebirth. The Aztecs timed
these rituals by using the Aztec calendar, based on the Mayan calendar. Last year on
December 21, 2012, the Aztec and Mayan calendars completed its current “Great Cycle”
Today the holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and
remember friends and family members who have died. Traditions connected with the
holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls,
marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with

Cycle”, we are celebrating our 2013 Day of the Dead event at the Sun Gallery with our
annual Day of the Dead Art Show called “A NEW BEGINNING”.

Dead Line to Submit: Friday, September 28th
- Art Drop-off: Friday, October 4, from 4-6pm, and Saturday, October 5, 12 -
- Show Dates: Thursday, October 10, to Sunday, November 10, 2013
- Artist Reception: Saturday, October 26 from 3pm - 7pm
- Art Pick-up: Sunday, November 10, from 2pm - 6pm.
The following are the guidelines and fees for the show:
1) Artwork will be juried for entry digitally or by photo at no cost to the artist. Artwork
can be any media including, but not limited to painting, sculpture, glass-work, ceramics,
drawing, and assemblage. Alters may also be included in this show at the fees listed
below. Send a brief description of your idea and the approximate size for floor
2) Please email your contact information along with your jpeg images of your
submissions to email@example.com subject line: “A New Beginning”. JPEGs
should be no larger than 8” in height and 300 dpi maximum. Please name your files as
follows: firstinitial.lastname.title.jpg. You may also submit via CD using the same
format and mail to 1015 E St., Hayward CA 94541. If you have any questions, please
contact us by email at the same address, subject line ATTN: JANE. Artists will be
notified on an ongoing basis if their art has been selected for this show. If your work is
chosen to be part of the show you will be sent a contract and inventory list.
We need 300 dpi images for press releases and postcards, so please send
them. If you get the jpeg files to us by the September 28
enough time to review your submittals, send you a notification of acceptance into
the show, and have your name included on the postcard invitational!
3) Fees: Members: $30 for up to 3 pieces not to exceed 24 sq. feet in wall area, and $5
per additional piece. Non-members: $45 /3 pieces same as above. Full time students may
submit one piece of work at no charge.
4) You can pick up postcard invitations at the gallery prior to the show, or if you want
them mailed to you, add another $5.00. Please make your check payable to Sun Gallery.
If you wish to pay by credit card you can come to the gallery or call during regular
dead line, we will have
5) Artists must identify their work with a label attached to the FRONT of the artwork
with: name, title of the art piece, medium, and price. All of this information must also be
submitted on your inventory sheet. This info will be used for the wall labels. All wall
mounted work MUST BE WIRED and ready to hang, matted and framed or edges
gallery wrapped and finished. No special installation requirements and no ceiling
mounted works are eligible. We reserve the right to refuse accepted work that arrives
damaged, is too fragile to be exhibited or was misrepresented in submission.
6) If you submit one, a one-page artist statement or bio will be displayed in a binder that
accompanies the show. Remember, you can bring your statement/bio along with you to
7) Sun Gallery does not provide art insurance on your work. The Gallery will take every
precaution to ensure the safety of your pieces, however, we cannot be held responsible
for theft or damage to your work while on the gallery premises. Each artist, if they wish,
may provide their own insurance.
8) Sun Gallery will keep a 30% commission on any sale of artwork.
9) No artwork will be removed from exhibition during the show.
10) Out of Area Artists: Artists are responsible for their shipping costs for the show.
Work should arrive by Saturday, October 5th 2013. Should your work not sell, you will
be responsible for the shipping costs for their return. Work should be shipped in a
reusable carton/box or packing crate. No Styrofoam peanuts please! Please include a $10
check payable to Sun Gallery to cover the labor expense for uncrating, storage of crates,
re-crating your painting and contracting a shipper for return. In a separate check, include
a check made out to Sun Gallery to cover the cost of return shipping unless you provide
your billing account number with a shipping company. Both checks should be in an
envelope inside the crate with your artwork.
11) Local Artists: Deliver uncrated, ready to hang or show, artwork to the Sun Gallery
on the following dates: Friday, October 4th from 4-6pm, and Saturday, October 5th from

Director, at 510-885-0101 to make alternative arrangements.
An artist reception is planned for Saturday, October 26th, 2013, 3:00 p.m. – 7:00
p.m. with food, music and dance performances. Please try and ensure that you will
be available to attend if your artwork is selected. This event also serves as a
fundraiser for the gallery. Food and drinks will be available for a small
donation. Artists are encouraged to bring a dessert or side dish to the festivities.
