Natali Bravo-Barbee Answers 5 Questions

Natali Bravo-Barbee.   What are you trying to communicate with your work? In my work, I like to think I communicate the importance of time via objects. I am a photographer, and for 20 years I have been capturing and hoarding memories. Snapping photos of precious moments, moments that I deemed as precious. Not everyone agrees in the moment, but I believe the phrase “hindsight is 20/20” is exactly what photography does. So in my work, rather than creating a still life with these... [more]

The Covered Passages of Paris

by Sarah Gasper
The Parisian Arcades, called les passages couverts in French, were created during the 1820s and 1830s and were the centers of the luxury good trade in France. There were around 150 arcades built in the mid-nineteenth century in Paris and they can be considered the ancestors of the modern day shopping mall.  These covered shopping centers would include elegant shops and cafés. Most were constructed using iron and would have glass coverings and have marble or mosaic floors. The first... [more]

What are you trying to communicate with your work? My ideas come from my interests in the urban, built environment. As I lived and traveled in different cities in China and the United States, I witnessed the continuous reshaping and renovation of these globalized urban landscapes. The elements of these constructed areas sometimes appear misplaced—ambiguous functions or anachronistic intentions emerge. As a result, the qualities of uncertainty, deficiency, inaccessibility, and... [more]
