DESCRIPTION

Magen H Gallery and Gerald Moreau are pleased to present an exhibition with works by Le Corbusier, which will be accompanied by a exhibition catalogue. Entitled "Le Corbusier and His Associates", we will showcase over 40 pieces of his iconic furniture and interior designs from his urban planning and commissions in France and India during the twentieth century. These pieces will create an engaging space where Le Corbusier's progressive ideas on modern living and landscapes will begin to materialize. The opening reception will take place at the gallery on Wednesday, May 1st from 6-8pm, with a panel discussion prior to the opening at 5:30pm.

Le Corbusier (born as Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, in Switzerland 1887) was the most seminal architect and urban planner during the twentieth century. Dedicated to implementing more efficient and simpler living conditions, Le Corbusier was one of the first pioneers of modern architecture who encouraged new spacial principles.

After the extensive damages during France post-war, Le Corbusier was determined to rehabilitate society with a purpose to create more indoor and outdoor space for residents. In 1945, he was granted his first commission by the French state for a new large housing project called Unité d'Habitation in Marseille. This project allowed Le Corbusier to fully manifest his designs and convey his idea on modern living -- the building has arguably become one of Le Corbusier's most significant and inspiring large scale projects.
Following the successes of Le Corbusier’s commissions, the City of Chandigarh in India entrusted him to become the lead urban planner in hopes to rebuild their city from a clean slate after the Indian Partition in 1947. During his extensive time in India, his projects included the High Court, Secretariat, the Assembly, as well as other interior and urban designs throughout the city. Having many advocates during this time, Le Corbusier worked with several assistants and fellow architects who helped to execute his projects. Some of whom includes, Pierre Jeanneret Charlotte Perriand, Marta Pan, amongst others.

Le Corbusier was and remains a highly influential figure in modern architecture. Widely praised as a visionary with imaginative urban designs and use of space, he was able to dramatically transform the understanding of a modern society. By curating a selection of significant furniture pieces and interior designs by Le Corbusier and his associates from his projects in France and India, the exhibition will bring to attention the legacy of his beliefs on modernity in both architecture and way of living.
