DESCRIPTION

Present Tense: Task of Remembrance, a contemporary art exhibition, is inspired by the 30th anniversary of the global, cultural, and political upheavals of 1989—a year that saw hope at the fall of the Berlin Wall, traumas of protests in Tiananmen Square, and the resilience of Chinatown after the Loma Prieta earthquake. The Present Tense series is a group exhibition that fosters dialogue and provides a survey on current issues.

With rising global xenophobia, the impact of regressive policies on the lives of migrants and refugees, and the retrenchment of systematic violence and racism, Task of Remembrance will explore the ways artists and their communities continue to build and engage with memory, struggles for freedom, and the weight of history. There will be fourteen participating artists and art collectives—7 of whom are local—will showcase works across a variety of mediums, from sculptural installation to experimental film.
