DESCRIPTION

William Baczek Fine Arts, in Northampton, Massachusetts is proud to present a solo exhibition of oil paintings by Jana Brike. The exhibition, titled The Ebbs and Flows of Heartblood will feature ten new paintings that the artist has recently completed. The show will run from Wednesday, November 15 through Saturday, December 16, 2017. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, November 18 from 5 – 7 p.m.

Jana Brike is an artist who lives and works in Riga, Latvia. This is her first solo exhibition at William Baczek Fine Arts. To describe Brike’s work is to use all of the terminology that is currently overused to describe many female painters who address feminism, gender dynamics, sexuality vs. sensuality, mythology and human’s effect in and on the natural world. Describing her own work, the artist states: “The main focus of Jana Brike's art is the internal space and state of a human soul - dreams, longing, love, pain, the vast range of emotions that human condition offers and the transcendence of them all, the growing up and self-discovery. Her work is her poetic visual auto-biography.”

Jana Brike often depicts solitary females in nature. They are heroic, sensual, in-charge and often partially or fully nude. But unlike many paintings of unclothed females in nature, Brike’s paintings are empowering, as if their bodies are not only interacting with nature, but truly part of it. The artist often uses herself as a model and hidden in her work are many layers of meaning, some more literal than others, many left up to the interpretation of the viewer.

Jana Brike’s paintings have been exhibited internationally, not only in the United States but also in Germany, Australia, Japan and Singapore. After the first two weeks of the exhibition, part of the show will move to Miami, Florida when William Baczek Fine Arts will present her work at the PULSE, Miami Beach art fair from December 7 – 10.
