The NO. STARVING. ARTISTS. Auction
“The NO. STARVING. ARTISTS. Auction will be a great way to start a new art collection, or to augment an existing one, “says Ellen Martin, the Event Director, who is coordinating the event with Belmar artist Sandy Taylor. “Eighteen established and very talented artists are putting some of their earlier work on the auction block in what’s sure to be a fast-paced, fun event. Come at 2:00 p.m. to get your paddle and start viewing the work. Bidding will start at 3:00. It’s a free event and everyone is welcome.”
Artists from all around New Jersey are participating in the auction, so it’s a great chance to buy local. The list includes Patricia Hutchinson, Alexandra Martin, and Sandy Taylor from Belmar; RitaMarie Cimini and Lorraine DeProspo from the Montclair area; Laura Petrovich-Cheney from Asbury Park, as well as Dawn DiCicco, Kathleen Heron, Shoshana Kertesz, Colleen Lineberry, Amy Puccio, Mike Quon, Sharon Sayegh, Madeleine Shaw, Elaine Shor, and Karen Starrett. Many of the artists have impressive resumes and are award winners. Lorraine DeProspo and Amy Puccio have both been awarded solo exhibitions in the Monmouth Museum’s New Jersey Emerging Artists series.
“A lot of organizations, including non-profits, are always asking artists to donate work, and many of them can actually afford to pay the artists, or at least give the artists a part of the proceeds from the sales. I am actually starting to see more organizations split commissions with the artists, and that’s encouraging. But since I believe that artists should get paid, I decided not to take any commissions for this event. And I have to thank Ryan Jimenez, the General Manager of the Hotel Tides, for being on board with this idea. They too will take no commission. All the proceeds will go directly to the artists to help them further their careers.” says Martin. “I did ask each artist to chip in $20 and this money will be used to pay our auctioneer, to pay our graphic designer and for supplies.”
“We’re all looking forward to an exciting event where both the artists and the art-loving public will enjoy a win-win event,” add Sandy Taylor, the event’s co-coordinator. “With many galleries closing, there are more limited opportunities for artists. This event, which is almost a pop-up, with allow the artists to meet new people, and for collectors to meet new artists. They are all working artists with studios who have ongoing relationships with their collectors. Plus, the ambiance of the Hotel and the comfort of the lobby will all add to the exciting afternoon.”
