Statement
Curt LeMieux’s production as a visual artist consists of works that combine genres. His works on paper juxtapose traditional “fine art” techniques with impoverished methods. There is little or no attempt to conceal the artist’s hand as incidental marks become important to the overall composition. LeMieux executes numerous studies on a single idea to arrive at a set of essential symbols. His personal iconography includes depictions of humans, animals, the natural world, alchemical elements and processes, and enigmatic forms. He has exhibited work at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Minsk, Belarus; The Santa Monica Museum of Art, Santa Monica, California; and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Los Angeles, California. LeMieux is currently working with Kristina Faragher on a series of 12 digital videos titled, “Twelve from the Underground.” A concern with the role of the individual in relation to American History serves as a conceptual framework for this series. The works are deliberately non-narrative as the goal is not to tell a story but rather to provide a sequence of moving images and sounds that prompt imagination and inquiry and invite multiple interpretations. Selected videos have screened at Track 16 Gallery, Santa Monica, California; The Berkeley Video and Film Festival, Berkeley, California; and at The University of Manizales in Colombia. LeMieux holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art from the Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California.
