Maria Cristina received her B.A. from Gettysburg College, pursued interdisciplinary studies (Art & Social Sciences) at the Transart Foundation-Houston, with Surpik Angelini and Abdel Hernandez, The Glassell School of the Museum of Fine Arts-Houston, Sam Houston State University, and also completed graduate level course work at The Johns Hopkins University -Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies- Washington, DC.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Fundamentally, humankind has a need for social cohesion; we long to be useful, desired and connected to each other.  Oftentimes these social needs are unmet, especially during times of transition. Our technology dependent world of global interconnectedness has unfortunate side effects of isolation and disconnection. This inadequacy concerns me and occupies my thoughts as I make art.

Compassion, empathy, love and truth are among the best qualities of human experience; yet paradoxically they often accompany conditions of unimaginable human suffering. My conceptually based art, addresses suffering and redemption through the lens of warurban dislocation, homelessness, and global climate change.  It is multi-disciplinary; combining mixed media, photography, Video, Printmaking, found materials, performance and installation.   As an Artist I feel obligated to build bridges, to create space for dialogue and to connect people by promoting understanding and broad-mindedness.

Aesthetically, my art conveys an appreciation for the authentic, as opposed to a traditional beauty aesthetic. In a society where the cult of youth is exalted, where the worn while still functional is discarded, and where aging is often seen as anathema instead of as a normal progression of life, my acclaim of the “real” over the “idealized” is a statement of acceptance and grace.

My praise of the tattered and of the much handled is a metaphoric appreciation of age and experience, of silver-hair, wrinkle-lined faces, stiff bearings, paunchy bodies and forgetful memories. It is defiant approval of the value of imperfection and a tribute to the wisdom of experience.  It is a hopeful expression of regard for everyone, because beautiful imperfection is the space we all inhabit.

I am an American Artist of Spanish, Cuban and Puerto Rican descent. I have exhibited works in galleries, alternative spaces, corporations and museums in Asia, Europe, Latin America and the USA.    I pursued interdisciplinary studies (Art & Social Sciences) at the Transart Foundation-Houston, with Surpik Angelini and Abdel Hernandez, The Glassell School of the Museum of Fine Arts-Houston, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, TX, The Johns Hopkins University -Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies- Washington, DC and Gettysburg College in Gettysburg,PA.
