Txema Novelo

1982

Lives and works in Mexico City

He is currently enrolled in the master program at the National Studio for Contemporary Arts Le Fresnoy, in France. He studied film at the University Center for Film Studies (CUEC) at the Autonomous National University of Mexico (UNAM) and at the Vancouver Film School in Canada.

☯ Txema Novelo pays a great deal of attention to the space between the divine and the quotidian.  His work is guided by the anthems preached in alternative rock music, the mysticism of religion and altars that inspire prayer to a higher power- whether it’s to a deity, philosopher or a divine personal practice. Central to his work is the concept of Joy Division/ Sad Divine, a play on the basic Gnostic principle that humans are naturally divine beings yet divided from the spiritual realm by their own physical creation. Logically, this pairing would be Sad Division / Joy Divine but through its reversal, he tries to bring this gnosis with his medium of choice — rock ‘n’ roll — and at the same time throwing the principle’s core assumption into critical perspective.

Through remapping Western and Oriental Holy Scriptures upon the mythologies of twentieth century popular music and culture, he is trying to reintroduce a sense of the sacred into contemporary art. This within the realms of video, installation, performance and sculpture.☯

He has participated with his work in various international and national art fairs and festivals such as the 3rd SAPS Public Art forum in Mexico City, the Havana Biennial 03, the Image Festival of Toronto 2002 / 2010, the Contemporary Art Fair MACO 04 /06 /11 in Mexico City, the Contemporary Art Fair ARCO 05 in Madrid, Spain (Mexico was the invited country for this year) and in the VII International Call for Young Artists for the Luis Adelantado Gallery in Valencia, Spain. He also took part in the the FRIEZE 06 Art Fair in London, UK, in the International Contemporary Film Festival of Mexico City FICCO 2007, in the 2nd SIVAM Visual Arts Contest in Mexico City, as well as the International Art Biennial of Mexico-California 09/10 and the 2nd Moscow Biennial of Young Art 2010.

His work has also been exhibited individually and collectively in museums and galleries from Canada, USA, Poland, Spain, Argentina and Mexico. Among these, are the Ramis Barquet Gallery in Monterrey, Mexico and the Carrillo Gil Art Museum in Mexico City, the ‘Zamek Ujazdowski’ Contemporary Art Museum of Warsaw, Poland, the ‘Reina Sofia’ National Museum of Art and ‘La Casa Encendida’ New Media Art Space in Madrid, Spain and the ‘Fundacion Telefonica’ Art Space in Buenos Aires, Argentina among others.
