Kate Moss is representative of Bond’s childhood, growing up in the 90’s, and being constantly exposed to consumer culture. Kate is a subconscious role model because one sees her, but does not always recognize Kate in advertisements. Kate is a chameleon, playing the role of traditional feminine beauty by being in fashion, while simultaneously being this androgynous, bad girl, femme fatal, ‘I don’t care’, somewhat nihilist anti-feminine icon, which consequently makes a beautiful, fun thing to look at and paint. Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, American culture, and childhood influence Bond’s choices in color, brush work, and composition. Using a cheap, commercial, but symbolic palate allows Bond to express her personal history because each color has a different meaning, for example: green for money, peach for cosmetics, blue for sky, etc. Using Kate as consistent subject matter allows Bond to focus on color, transparency, composition, technique, line, and explore the ideas of landscape, architecture, and celebrity.
