Statement

Artist Statement

I am only interested in making art if it is a challenge. It needs to hold excitement and attract my curiosity.

I often envision ideas, or see myself painting in the stage between sleep and awakening. Memories are stringed together, flying by; huge spaces evolve, but foremost: there is color.

Lately, I combine my work with my love for poetry. My favorite poet Yannis Ritsos and his expressive, erotic poems are finding their way back into my paintings. In my teens his poems lived on my body, now they are burned into my paintings and monotypes.

It is a fiery transition, in fast forward mode.

I paint and print in wax, because the process embodies vulnerability, my stepping stone for progress and evolution.

Birgit Huttemann-Holz, 2016

Bio

In the studio of her uncle Werner Holz, an outstanding German artist, Birgit Hüttemann-Holz was exposed to Imaginary Realism/ Phantastische Malerei from early age on. Intrigued by the contradictions of the human psyche she first started to write poetry.

While working as a Physical Therapist, she went to study literature, philosophy and media science at the University of Karlsruhe and Philipps-University in Marburg, Germany.

A sudden move to the US triggered an end to her writings. A universal language was needed- a visual form that moved her words beyond the limitations of translations and geography. It wasn't long before she discovered the ancient Greek practice of encaustic painting.

Huttemann-Holz has exhibited in the UK, Turkey, Germany, The Netherlands, and extensively in the US including New York, Santa Fe and Detroit.

She was awarded Finalist of the International Portrait Competition, Society for Art of  Imagination, UK (2011),  Best of Show, Platform Award, OK (2013),  Best of Show, NANA 14, FL  (2014) and won multiple awards nationwide.

Her work was also selected for Studio Visit Magazine, winter edition 2013, summer edition 2017 and Saatchi Collection "New This Week", April, 2014, Palm Award, Germany (Certificate of Excellence) 2015.

She was awarded a month long residency in The Key West Studios, FL, for Feb/March 2017.

Her book " Enkaustik- Das Grundlagenbuch zur Wachsmalerei" was published April 2015, Christopherus Verlag, Germany.

Her work was selected to represent Michigan, out of a total of seven Midwest artists in the book Encaustic Art in the 21 Century", Schiffer Publishing, 2016, that features 79 North American artists, organized by geographical region.

Huttemann- Holz lives and works in Detroit, USA.
