Jennifer Faist: Friends, Acquaintances and Strangers by Eve Wood

Jennifer Faist's newest body of work, aptly titled Acquaintances and Strangers, constitutes a deeper more thorough exploration into the derivation of form. Expanding on previous themes, Faist has created a series of “sculptural paintings” made from resin, acrylic and wood that expound ideas of intimacy and personal association. These works, unlike her previous work, have an added component of connectivity that can almost be read as a kind of collaboration where Faist has asked... [more]

By Mat Gleason For decades now, Jennifer Faist has made abstract painting look easy. Her almost monochrome meditations have privileged subtlety and sensuality as their sole subjects. In her April, 2015, solo show at the Ruth Bachofner Gallery, though, she brought in a third element: disruptive patterns. Jennifer Faist's current exhibition of minimal works, clean edges, pristine surfaces are reminiscent of various artists that have traveled and taught in southern California.  Artists like Tony DeLap, James Turrell, John McCracken and Robert Irwin work with similar content as seen in Faist's work. The exception is that Faist is endeavoring to "feminize" her work by including pieces of fabric in the layers of the work.  The fabrics are designed to reflect Faist's feminine and nostalgic... October 21, 2007"I Remember Too," Jennifer Faist, Ruth Bachofner Gallery, Santa Monica, CA, by James ScarboroughLyrical and sensuous, bright and playful, I Remember Too, Jennifer Faist's seven-piece show in the intimate backspace at the Ruth Bachofner Gallery, brims with delightful surprises.Hung with syncopation and eloquence, the seven richly hued paintings look either like xylophone keys or else books arrayed on a shelf. Combined, the vertical, narrow pieces and the small square ones that... [more]
