the background info
“Life was to be a search, or nothing! But it was the fear that it was nothing that drove me forward. Every encounter was an encounter with myself.” John Le Carre
My roots are pure Los Angeles. I grew up in "the Valley" before moving to Venice Beach and then Silverlake. Thus making the hillside landscape and brilliant Pacific a driving force in my life. I went back to school in my early twenties and studied fine art with an emphasis on photography. I was accepted to all the art schools I applied to with Scholarships and decided to forgo them all and move to New York.
The city spoke to my ADD nature and while the School of Hard Knocks is an unconventional path, it is the one I attended. I worked for the best photographers New York had to offer and learned all I could. Most importantly, I learned that I am a terrible assistant. I was too focused on studying my "teachers" work and realizing that traditional commercial photography never suited me. I am a bare bones, documentary style photographer. I produce photographic images that honor the artist's innate personality. Whether they're a musician, dancer, painter or fighter, my portraits give the viewer an opportunity to see inside the artist's world.
I left the city of Manhattan for Brooklyn and began my career as a freelance photographer. Having grown up in the punk clubs in LA, most of my clients are musicians but I travel outside those circles and embrace the opportunity to photograph any and all individuals. After a year in Williamsburg, my love for my niece and nephew and an undeniable need to return to the warmth of the west coast brought me back to Silverlake. I appreciate the LA "winters".
During my last year on the East Coast, I rediscovered my love for painting and drawing. Between my photo shoots, I would stay up at night drawing on the floor of my studio apartment, my dog slumbering by my side. My drawings are a continuation of myself, as they were; best described as a visceral experience. I do not know why I have an intrinsic need to communicate in this way. But the work allows others to find their own meanings within it and I think that is what is essential. Most often, my paintings are commissioned work. After meeting with my clients in their home, I produce a piece or pieces that are made for them specifically.
Lastly, traveling has been an integral part of my existence. You will find on my site a section of landscape portraits. Keenly focused on the impact that people have on their environment; noted by their absence within the images themselves
