Statement / Bio

Eldi Dundee is a NY born artist who has lived in London half her life. Her practice consists of an interchange of painting, photography, assemblage, performance, installation, writing, drawing and sculpture. Eldi studied Fine Art at UAL Central Saint Martins’ Byam Shaw campus and University of East London. She is currently enrolled part-time on the MA Fine Art at Chelsea (UAL). She has a background in performance (acting, singing, directing) and had studied Human Ecology in America before emigrating to the UK.

Dundee's artistic concerns tend to stem from and revolve around the fact and act of inhabiting a female form. Notions of feminism, anti-feminism, childhood memory, identity, interpretations of beauty, meditations on sex and sexuality, and subtle and not so subtle forms of power, control and violence suffuse a major part of her work.

Other aspects of her output operate as philosophical enquiries into the psychic dichotomy between the embodiment of the carnal or sensual body, juxtaposed with a curiosity about what transcendence might mean - artistically, psychologically, symbolically, and as an ongoing thought experiment, perhaps even actually.

She has been known to express all of the above through a darkly humorous use of dolls in assemblages, installations, performance and paintings, and in her Wrestling Women series of paintings, prints, carvings and castings which pose questions of sexual exploitation, as in: who is really exploiting whom? Ironically, the Wrestling Women series, whose source material was online images of pornographic wrestling matches, has been re-appropriated by an internet porn site, much to Dundee's annoyance.*

She is fascinated by what she considers to be the almost palpable psychological pull of pre- and post-performance objects, detritus or space, and the performative physicality of the making of the work itself. Hence, a tendency towards durational performative installations with an open sense of beginning-middle-end, and objects activated within the performance, or by the viewer's imagination before and after.

She has enjoyed performing her own works, but also on behalf of or in collaboration with other artists, and this is an aspect of her work that she wishes to continue developing into the future.

More recently, Dundee has been exploring ways of bringing a more autobiographical and psychoanalytical angle to her work, by use of performed and unperformed text.

And she has begun to reclaim her love of 3D figure modelling in her commissions for Article 25's 10x10 charity auction at the Shard and BP's Centenary Collection bronzes.
