I was born in Malaysia, but live and work today in Denmark.
In Malaysia I am received as an artist who lives abroad-hence an ´expat artist`. In Denmark, on the contrary, I am received as a ´migrant artist´ or ´ethnic artist´. This somehow labels me as an exotic artist and I have to deal with the conception, that my root and culture is the subject matter of my work. Being entangled in between these two positions as an artist, I am constantly facing the questions of identity.
In my work I question myself-: Am I a ´Malaysian artist`? Or an artist that comes from Malaysia? Does my National identity determine the way I work? Or is my work a reflection of the different cultural directions I am influenced by?
In my work I try to open up a discussion of power relations, clash of traditions and modernity, East and West.
As a foreign artist based in Denmark, I hope my work will be able to contribute with new perspectives on the issues of globalization and the multicultural art community- hence global artist -global citizen.
