  In 1968 the Ghanaian author Ayi Kwei Armah published a brutal and visceral novel of (then) contemporary, post-Inde­pendent Ghana, titled “The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born”.       Invited to slice a cake in honor of her new solo show at the Mart House Gallery, Dineo Seshee Bopape debated for a moment then tentatively sliced the round dessert not into radial wedges, but into rectangles. One onlooker joked that perhaps Bopape, who finished an MFA at Columbia this year, has been in New York so long she’s now thinking in grids.     “You fucking horrible horrible horrible bitch!” reads the title painting that greets visitors as they enter Dineo Sheshee Bopape’s new exhibition at the Mart House Gallery. The surprise (and comedy) of this salutation sets the tone of the show. Bopape’s mixed-media works transform the gallery into a fantastical wonderland inhabited by glittery paintings, colorful drawings, repetitive sounds, bright lights, and moving images. - Dineo Seshee Bopape is an artist whose work defies categorization: it spans a variety of media, from painting and drawing to video and installation; a variety of forms, from raw performance to the poetically abstract; and tackles subjects of gender, politics, race, psychology, sexuality, and more.  I had the opportunity to visit Bopape at her studio near Columbia University, where she is an MFA candidate.
