Pilgrimage of Landscape

2016 Solo Exhibtion Statment)

Landscape is a very common genre and has a long history. In Asia, starting from 7th century, it developed into a way of conveying inner landscape of artist's heart and mind. In the west, it was mostly used as backgrounds of religious and portrait paintings before 17 centuries. I am interested in both uses of landscapes.

Ive been working with landscapes since 2009, after I moved to Dubai. In Dubai, the landscape and weather were so different from anything I had experienced before. It left a strong resonance within me. As I settled there, I was immersed in the culture of Dubai as well. In 2013, I moved back to Japan. At this time I was more sensitive to the unique and multifarious ways in which the Japanese landscape and weather affected the country's arts and people. In Japan, the weather is humid and the landscape is very abundant in water.

Mokuhanga is a unique Japanese technique expressed through the prevalence of water in Japanese weather. Having seen Hiroshige exhibition in NY, at first I was attracted to the artwork's flatness and transparencies of color. This led me to explore Mokuhanga in my artist residency at Nagasawa art Park in 2003. I was impressed by how in the Mokuhange technique, the relationship to water is crucial. Not only do you need to moisten the wooden blocks and paper to produce the work; but also in the making of the baren sin -which is a tool that we use to rub the paper with - baren sin makers moisten the bamboo strings to shape the tool itself.

The intimate and dynamic relationship between humans and nature is something that is reflected in artists and their work. When I had a chance to visit the Catalonia area, I was awoken to the fact that impressionist paintings were the products of their environment. The brightness of the Catalonian sun, the colorful landscapes at harvest season, and their reflections in the artist's paintings completely made sense to me.

Presently, making these Mokuhanga rings true with how I live here in Japan. Living in Tokyo, I don't have the space to do large paintings. While raising a child, I also don't have big chunk of time to concentrate on paintings. Choosing an image and working on carving and printing, little by little with the space and time that is available, I find my own intimate landscape.
