The play of light seen behind a transparent surface is a theme that runs through all of my work. My imagery centers around the Hudson Riverscape many different types of repurposed materials not usually associated with art to acheived interesting textures. These materials and layers of paint are embedded in multiple layers of resin, crackle varnish and colored wax. Each layer brings you closer to the past, a sort of archeology of brush strokes. Textures and patinas give a dimension of age and variation to the surface which evoke the past and speak to the present. While these paintings are distinctly Hudson River imagery, the story is a universal one. Life, communities, industry instinctively begin along a waters edge. These images speak to the human interaction with our surroundings and the climatic changes that occur as a result of those actions.
SOUNDINGS: is the newest series of Riverscapes playing with the idea of sonic underwater imaging of topography, trade winds, seasonal flows and benthic mapping of the Hudson River bottom. Think of visualizing the unseen river bottom as a landscape. Most of the titles for these paintings come from the weather and depth measurements journal written by Robert Juet who sailed on the ship The Half Moon in 1609 with Henry Hudson during its historic explorations of Americas First River. This work is in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the exploration of the Hudson River in 2009. My hope is that these works will help get the public thinking about the Hudson as something more than just a body of water but as living history and an ecological microcosm proving anti pollution laws do work. The beauty of the river is not just on the surface. There is a whole world to explore beneath the surface too.
I am equally influenced by the work of Hudson River School of art painter's Thomas Cole and Frederick Church on the one hand and on the other, modern painter's like Mark Rothko and his zen like color fields and Jackson Pollack 's action paintings. Even though my paintings don't look like anything any of these artists paint, they do inspire, infuse and fuel a spirit. I take the love and history for the Hudson region from Cole and Church. The vibration of color on color from Rothko and the planned yet seemingly random action dripping of paint and resin and wax from Pollack.
At the moment, some of my favorite art to study are the new Luminists. Check out Eline and Colin Barkley, a mother and son who paint mostly but not exclusively, the Hudson River Landscape. They equally inspire awe for their work and the natural beauty they depict.
ARTIST’S BIOGRAPHY: CARLA GOLDBERG
Originally from Southern California, I moved to the East Coast to pursue my graduate degree in Painting at MICA in Baltimore, Maryland. In my travels with my husband Stephen, we stumbled onto the Hudson Valley region of New York and it was love at first sight. We have lived in this region since 1990. Having always been a non-objective abstract painter, in recent years the Hudson landscape has grabbed my attention. For the better part of four years I have been working with paint embedded in layers of resin, yet still applying that abstract sensibility to these Hudson Riverscapes. While this may be a new subject matter for me, the use of heavily textured surfaces and transparent and solid layering are a continuation of and connection to a past style of work.
