Natural Patterns and Human Structures: Finding Harmony and Discord in the Modern Landscape

Experience

I paint abstracted representational landscapes exploring the relationship of the human condition to the earth we live on.  I have always found my joy in escaping to nature from the suffering of my own existence.  My work has often searched the nostalgic feelings I have for the natural world untouched by human hands.

I have recently gone through my third and fourth hip surgeries, and have faced once again the failing structures of my body being replaced by human-made mechanisms.  Having had my quality of life and health improved by modern medicine, I wonder if we can do the same with our technology for our planet?  Can we find the natural harmony in our own creations?

Process

I work both from observation and from my creative sub-conscious.  I find compositions of circles, triangles and lines, creating conflict between the foreground and background, and often negating the horizon.  I find visual inspiration from the patterns and structures of both the natural and the human landscape.  I express these concepts through the spontaneous movement of tactile oil paint brushed onto the canvas.
