Statement

Wendy Saunders’ paintings can be described as figurative; and at first glance some may look like portraits although she would say that she makes paintings of faces or heads. Looking to convey the tricky and largely indefinable nature of expression, mood and person, she uses the malleable and constantly shifting nature of paint to produce this response, not with sharp reproductive clarity but rather by blurring or sometimes completely removing detail. The painting works through engagement with the viewer by suggestion, not description.
