Quick Facts

Seeking, exploring and escaping are themes Marlies Kuhn develop when creating an archive of visual perceptions. Through her painting she establish a found and gathered vocabulary for a body of work, often in response to a place. Kuhn incorporate imperfections in her hand-drawn lines and the slippage of paint over the border. Jarring colors and harsh angles take a backstage to blues, greens, and earthy colors. Geometry becomes a different kind of nature, repeating one image in many variations or forms. At its basis, escape involves forgetting the known.

Marlies Kuhn was born in Schwerin, a town in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, East Germany, in 1978. She studied Fine Art in Norway, Denmark and Germany where she earned her Masters in Fine Art at the Muthesius Academy in 2011. Her work has appeared internationally in exhibitions among others in Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Germany and China. She was awarded by the State Chancellery of Schleswig-Holstein/Germany and the German Academic Exchange Service. Kuhn has received a residency from the Hanseatic city of Rostock/Germany and is currently as an Artist in Residence at The Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai where she is at work on her new Artists Book.
