OCAD University - Ontario College of Art and Design, 2013, BFA
SofiL is a Hong Kong-born Canadian emerging visual artist and designer. She received her BFA from Ontario College of Art, also known as OCAD University, and her MFA from New York Studio School.
Hong Kong was a British Colony in Asia and now a part of China, where as Canada was also a British Colony. Growing up under the influence of both Western and Eastern cultures, SofiL is engaged in examining art and multiculturalism. She is fond of the interaction between the East and the West, and her work demonstrates a mixture of two sides of perspective. In the exploration of traditional Western painting (paint on a surface), a hint of aesthetic taste and value of Asian calligraphy is also suggested.
In SofiL's early work of the cultural exchange series, she usually depicts a place that either she is familiar with (such as Hong Kong and Canada) or a European country, which she had never been to but is fascinated by. She is building her abstract imagery based on research and her perception of that particular culture.
To elaborate on the series, SofiL starts a new series of painting about places that she has been to and working from memory without using any direct references from life nor photograph. Her diverse background and travelling experience are sincerely portrayed. Since there is no specific guidelines nor structure that she has to follow, her work becomes more impromptu as well as she feels more free and impulsive. The image is formed as the process goes. There is nothing but true devotion.
SofiL has exhibited extensively across Ontario, Canada and New York State. Her work is in several private collections. She is a recipient of the LCU Housing Grant, and numerous scholarships and awards, such as Concordia Scholarship and Association of Christian Schools International Fine Arts Festival Awards.
