ENGLISH

Born in 1966, of English nationality, installed in France since 2001 after art school training in the UK at Grimsby, Bath and Hull Schools of Art in the 1990s and travelling throughout Europe. Following certain lines of the English landscape tradition and American abstraction of the 60s and 70s, his work has the weight and light of both Rothko and Turner.  With a predilection for square format canvases as a further counterpoint to established categorization of genres:

In his mature work since moving to the Lorraine region of France in 2001, Wayne Sleeth reiterates and re-explores the source and schema of his more formative sensations; the big skies above the flat lands of both the Lincolnshire coast of his father and the polders of maternal Flanders, where he also spent his childhood. The Lorraine region for this confirmed European is not only geographically strategic, but offers an echo of that very play of horizontality and verticality beyond the elements, where the artist finds full artistic liberty in “l’espace” as he knows and feels it, as far as the canvas edge…

« I paint neither landscapes nor seascapes. These are what l call ‘scapes' ;   an anagram for certain ‘spaces' which colour, line and texture inhabit, make their own, or escape."

FRANCAIS
