In “Parasitic Gaps,” a group show curated by Miriam Katzeff, the artists Matthew Higgs, Margaret Lee, James Hoff, and Georgia Sagri explore a variety of ways that text can consolidate or destabilize meaning. Often playing with “the mating of separates,” many of the works present disparate objects and elements together in a single piece, such as a paperback book with a minimalist painting and a watermelon with a De Stijl chair. The juxtaposition of different contexts becomes a strategy for... [more]
Childish-Like   Pick-button-f22fa879042524f5c7b8d2278b2983b8
Billy Childish at Lehmann Maupin - Chrystie Street November 4th, 2011 - January 21st, 2012

Like a girl with facial tattoos and rainbow hair searching for a spoon in the ambassador’s kitchen, the pictures of a painter with a legacy of working outside the system can appear awkward in a blue chip gallery. Both the catalogue and the wall text are at pains to reference the collectors’ “unpreposessing” suburban house—where thousands of works by hundreds of artists perpetually knock elbows—but if you haven’t made it up to their place in Westchester, all this art has simply jumped from the commercial white space where you first saw it to the academic one... A Few Words with Higgs and Panousakis   Pick-button-f22fa879042524f5c7b8d2278b2983b8
Matthew Higgs, Sotiris Panousakis at The Apartment April 15th, 2010 - April 29th, 2010

Showdown, with an imagined exhibition soundtrack by the Electric Light Orchestra, is the title of Matthew Higgs’ first show at the Apartment gallery in Athens. The exhibition features found book covers that are matted and framed, the ubiquitous curator, critic and artist’s signature work. Detached from the book’s interior and spread out to reveal a geometry of shapes and color, they include the dents and yellowed pages that depict their age and tell their story. A collector... [more]
