"My work is an intuitive response to my relationship with painting and my environment. I accentuate gesture as a vehicle for my desire to make dense layer based images which reflect my twelve-year journey through the Korean and American art education system. In my work, I challenge myself to archive my experience through different kinds of mark making and materials, and the relationship between myself and different surfaces and imagery. This way of making is a response to my experience of complex environments, such as the politics of art education systems and cities both foreign and familiar that I’ve spent time in. Through layering, my work becomes unreadable, but all the information and recorded responses is still there. Through the process of making, the images question both what I and viewers see through the busyness and multiple voices. The lack of focal point highlights the struggle I feel, to assert individuality within a visual culture of sameness and homogeneity."
