Statement and Resume

The primary objective of my painting for the last 30 years has been to exploit the spatial possibilities of the canvas while posing questions to the viewer about the history and the act of painting. For me, this has been an endlessly challenging and intriguing project.

My goal has been to create a dynamic sense of space that previously did not exist on the canvas through the use of various painterly surfaces, overlapping patterns, forms and textures. The illusionistic quality is furthered through the use of seemingly solid forms, such as plant life, ethnographic artifacts as well as kitsch paired with "windows" or tableaus inspired by old post cards or vacation photos. These visual holes in the canvas introduce a naturalistic depth while views of geysers, clouds and waterfalls introduce an element of frozen movement or time lapse. Occasionally, references are made to art styles and movements that when paired with seemingly unrelated materials, inevitably spawn a visual dialogue that will pique inquiry. While some references are fairly obvious, a Brancusi cup with an African mask, others such as Cypriote relics from the Met's shady past, beg questions about museology.

In a recent suite of works, I chose to use mesmerizing tile patterns photographed on a trip to Portugal as a backdrop to a stockpile of images: many old friends, a much used photo of Niagara Falls from my honeymoon and the aforementioned Met pieces.  As is usually the case, this initially straight forward exercise necessitated much editing, repainting and reevaluating before the pieces were eventually relegated to the finished pile. While some of the cast of characters was switched or replaced for formal reasons, the most apparent change was the total revamp of my original tile "model" to accommodate the overlying images and my impatience with the predictable nature of the ancient Arabic specimen.

Several years ago after completing a group of paintings that referenced various elements from Italian Mannerism, one of my favorite periods/schools of painting, I realized in retrospect that while my work was deplete of direct visual quotes from specific works, it still managed to evoke the cramped but ordered compositions of Tintoretto, El Greco and Parmigianino. I was satisfied to discover that even without that robed figure from an El Greco or that oddly twisted forearm from a Pontormo, the complex composition, high key palette and heightened sense of drama in my paintings still mirrored (in a contemporary form) qualities of those mannerist prototypes that once drew puzzled stares and challenged the boundaries of the painted canvas.
