miniature things have always fascinated me. as a child, it was natural to like objects that fit nicely into my realm. i still remember that sense of wonderment and feeling of intimacy when holding something small and precious in the palm of my hand.
the creation of my work is a meditation on ordering. an obsessive-compulsive arrangement of objects. taking a minimalist approach with dadaist influence, each assemblage conveys a winsome darkness created using items that were found, curated and assembled. they appear as manifested cabinets of curiosities, subconscious memento moris, and hybrid creatures borne out of imaginary realms of strange relics and remains.
the titles of my constructions are taken from fortune cookies. never wanting to discard them, i’ve collected hundreds over the years. the key is to choose the right one. the items used in my assemblages often symbolize greater ideas so the title becomes as important as the work and lends itself to the interpretation of each.
i started including heart shaped stones in my work because i constantly find them and wanted to share these small tokens...the earth’s own symbolic reminder of love.
the animal and insect fragments serve as reminders of the ephemeral nature of life. these creatures met their fates naturally and found their way to me through friends, family or during walks in the hills of los angeles.
cindy cronk’s miniature assemblages formed from memories of a childhood growing up on a farm, an adolescence spent watching the brothers quay, and a career surrounded by surrealist and latin american art.
she began making assemblages in 2010 after finding strange relics while organizing the studio of a late friend and mentor. while these items were considered of no value, she saw their unique qualities as objects of curiosity and searched for a way to use them.
