"Art is a journey of self-discovery"
Giuseppe Bellia alias Beddru is an Italian self-taught artist originally from Sicily. His work is strongly influenced by traditional Greek and Roman art, brought to life through rich Mediterranean textures.
Beddru's formative years were spent in the Agrigento province, where he absorbed the Hellenistic culture, surrounded by the astonishing beauty of Greek temples, perfectly proportioned statues and the vibrant colors of former Arabic domination, being these all key-elements that made him establish a powerful artistic connection to Nature.
Beddru believes that Art always returns one way or another to nature, whether it is figurative, like in his case, or abstract.
Sicily is an island where the intense cyan sky blends into the aquamarine of the Mediterranean Sea and sets for Beddru the scene for a life of artistic pursuits – commencing with figure drawings and sketches of scenes he carefully observes and represents. In the 1990's, after having admired the masterpieces of the greatest Italian artists in Palermo, Rome and Florence, Beddru starts traveling abroad and discovers the seducing artistic beauty of cities such as Paris, London and New York. He decides to leave Italy and moves to Brussels, where he refines his techniques at the École des Art of Brussels while continuing direct study of the great masters such as Leonardo, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, De Chirico, Frida Kalo, Tamara de Lempicka, Egon Schiele, Otto Dix and several others who, for different reasons, have been influencing his creative process. Currently his work focuses on the visualization of joyful emotions manifested in human beings being them real or fictive. The research process for this involves delving into positive journeys from the past, and understanding how they project onto the present. Beddru currently lives and paints in his atelier in Brussels - exhibiting on a regular basis. His artworks are part of international private collections.
