For a good time check out Kinkead Contemporary.  I stopped by on a Sunday to find the front room converted into a café and the back room turned into a Salon.  Cold beers were promptly distributed for a panel conversation. The room was packed with mostly artists I think.  The focus of the panel was on the notions of sincerity and authenticity in contemporary art (the irony pendulum has swung).  Ed Schad moderated with panelists Kelly McClane, Heather Brown, Kirston Stoltman, and Steve Roden.  The co... Carrie Yury at Sam Lee Gallery May 16th, 2009 - July 3rd, 2009

For her current exhibition, “Rooms”, Carrie Yury follows a simple set of rules.  She takes pictures of women, only women.  They are shown reclining in bed, or a few times on a couch, but always in their own private, unstaged residence.  The women wear only underwear, and the rooms wear only available light.  There is a rule of representation: the photographs show a cross section of nationalities, ages, and body types.  The last rule is that each piece is composed of two photographs. At first one reads t... Jeff Jamieson at David Patton Los Angeles April 25th, 2009 - May 30th, 2009

Jeff Jamieson makes his sculptures, and then most often picks one color and paints them.  A look at the list of artwork reveals a rather simple litany of materials: “Plywood and paint.”  He has a few drawings (“Ink on paper”) and a couple other pieces made from other things (one “Copper”, another “Aluminum”).  All the pieces but one are untitled with a parenthetical description of their color.Given his tendency towards professional understatement, in his off hours I think Jeff run... If you’re looking for the highest guns to burrito ratio in Los Angeles try the Chipotle on Figueroa near Exposition Blvd.A few steps into the place and you’ll notice four or five different types of law enforcement officers.  If you’ve ever been arrested you’ll be relieved by the big menu hanging above.  It will give you something to look at while you act natural. Regular cops are there.  The female police are the most normal.  The male cops look slightly lost with their faces out from behind thei... [more]

Sarah Cain at Five Thirty Three February 13th, 2009 - March 15th, 2009

Five Thirty Three is showing Sarah Cain’s “Midnight Mission” as an off site extension of the 2008 California Biennial.  Curator Aram Moshayedi put the exhibition together.  The non-commercial space surrounded by artists’ studios creates an excellent opportunity for emerging talent to develop and showcase ambitious work.  Cain puts up three pieces in the space.“Your Mind” props a canvas in the way of a mental game of shuffleboard with Mondrian.  Taped off black lines cut a portion of triangle on the c... Who is Dewey Crumpler?   Pick-button-f22fa879042524f5c7b8d2278b2983b8

Dewey Crumpler at California African American Museum October 9th, 2008 - April 26th, 2009

The name could have been lost in the back pages of an Elmore Leonard novel.  Instead it hangs above the best art show currently in Los Angeles.  A modest wing of the California African American Museum is packed with paintings, sculptures, etchings, videos, and installations. Curator Mar Hollingsworth was attracted by one piece in the museum’s permanent collection, “A Day in the Park, #4”.  When she went fishing to see what else the artist was up to she came across this body of work: the equi...
