You Killed Me First’s work represents the artists personal relationship with imagery from multiple pop culture and underground art references. Taking their name and many repeating images from director/photographer Richard Kern’s film, which was part of the 1980’s Cinema of Transgression movement, he mirrors the deep interest this movement had in the aesthetics of perversion and violence adding hand finished paint splatters mimicking blood in many pieces. The artist also finds interest in images from major pop culture icons ranging from films like Whatever Happened to Baby Jane to Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion. Of course, these images all have a place in the morbid which is where YKMF draws inspiration. Taking their background from digital and graphic design YKMF removes the repetitive "flyer"- like quality away from his images by hand painting each piece. This added touch makes YKMF's art stand out showing how repetitive can be unique and how pop culture and underground images influence us at every turn...
