Statement

MARKOS KAMPANIS was born in Athens in 1955 and studied painting at Wimbledon and at St. Martin’s School of Art in London, where he lived from 1974 to 1980. During his studies, he attended, for several months, Stavros Michalarias’ conservation workshop, as well as the printmaking workshop at the Apollo Etching Studio. In 1983, he spent six months in Florence, painting landscapes and studying the museums of Italy.

He is a painter as well as a printmaker. He has set up an etching workshop, known as “To Oros” (The Mount) at Karyes on Mount Athos, where etchings and engravings are being printed for monasteries, foundations and museums directly from the authentic 18th and 19th century plates, thus contributing to the effort to study, preserve and promote the Mount Athos printmaking tradition. He is the curator of the Mount Athos Art Arcives (Agioreitiki Pinakothiki) of the Monastery of Simonos Petra, which is primarily engaged with the work of contemporary artists inspired by Mount Athos, as well as the history of religious printmaking, an art form that once flourished there.

He has worked with several publishers, including Asteros, Indiktos, Ekdotiki Athinon and Ekdoseis tou Foinika, as a book illustrator. He has created murals at the Holy Monasteries of Simonos Petra, Sinai, Iviron and Vatopedi; in the past, he has also worked as a stage designer.

He has taken part in several group exhibitions in Greece and abroad. Group exhibitions in Greece include, indicatively, the Goulandris-Horn Foundation, Art Athina, the French Institute of Thessaloniki, the Pieridi Gallery, Aithousa Skoufa, the Greek National Opera, the Chrysothemis Gallery, the Gennadeus Library, and the Historical and Folklore Museum of Aegina. Outside of Greece, he has shown in group exhibitions in Britain, at the Camden Arts Centre, the Phoenix Gallery, the Βear Steps Gallery, the Gateway Arts Centre, Gallery K, and the Church of all Hallows, Taller Galleria Fort in Spain, the 17th Biennale of Children’s Book Illustration in Slovenia, the Lessedra Gallery in Bulgaria, the Del Bello Gallery in Canada, the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art in the U.S., and the Muban Foundation in China. In 1984, he was one of the artists representing Greece in the 15th Alexandria Biennale in Egypt.

Recently he participated in the touring international exhibition in UK, curated by Roger Wollen, “Myths, memories, mysteries: how artists respond to the past” (Nov 2013 Edinburgh, March 2014 Jarrow, July 2014 Cambridge, 2015 Volos and Larisa, Greece)
