Work in studio and recent auctions

I find myself contributing to my arts community in many ways - one recent way is via art auctions. Upcoming is the SF Artspan juried auction and then one in the south bay in April for the American Heart Association. Typically I contribute a smaller type work from a recent series and then hope my contribution will assist these nonprofits in generating revenue. I just posted Whirling Mantis, a larger oil on canvas, into the ArtSlant Juried Competition. The work is mainly in blues and consists of markmaking in an all-over or field composition. This work is from my Passages series (Please view my w... [more]

Canvas Preparation is Complete

Over the past few weeks I have been building an preparing 16 canvasses. Two were large (7' square), 8 medium size around 4' x 5' , and then 5 of them are small. I love preparing my own canvasses and really get into covering them with titanium based gesso. It does take a long time but it is well worth it. One can select the canvas grade and have the surface just the way you want it! The photo below shows a section of my studio with a few of the canvasses being prepared. [more]

Updating, updating

Today I am updating my Artslant Profile - they emailed me some helpful ideas relating to Profile pages and I hope the revisions will have a good result. I am uploading my recent The Ring series. This work relates to Tolkien's The Ring with its medieval and magical twist combining this with the chaos exhibited in Wagner's opera of the same name. It was a surprise to find out the San Francisco Opera is performing Wagner's piece and I hope I can attend to see what it is like in person. I often work with ideas of chaos and unstructure -  and then creating a formal contrast with something recogniza... [more]

Printmaking Workshops

Over the past two months I have been particpating in 3 printmaking workshops down at the ICA in San Jose. These have been experimental as I am not a pro printmaker. I am more inclined toward the immediacey of the moment that i obtain painting yet this was quite interesting and I learned so very much. Although my paintings are fairly referred to as abstractions - with printmaking I brought in ideas from my drawings - especially my figure drawings. It was  thrilling to work with the human figure again and see what types of references and meanings could be embraced. I worked with monoprint techni... [more]

New Work

In the studio I am working on a set of 4 4' x 5' paintings that are using tons of white paint - literally have orderd 3 quarts of white paint on Monday. Perhaps they are a response to the Samurai Exhibtion at Asian Art Museum in SF. Or perhaps an ongoing desire to continue my 5 years of martial arts studies. Right now they have the words:'to an unknown sensei' embedded into a surface of white paint with some other very subtle coloratian. I don't know if the text will remain at this moment but it is a continual reminder of my inspriation at this moment. When they are complete I will post.I have be... [more]

Defined Chaos, New Exhbition and Artist's Statement

Please visit exhibition in south park: Defined Chaos Filed under: Exhibitions in SF - kathryn arnold @ 8:08 pm Artist statement related to this exhibtionKathryn Arnold"Order within Chaos" or "Defined Chaos" These paintings are a result of intuitive nonobjectiveprocesses. There is no end to this continual process -perhaps being very much like nature. The sense oftouch and chaotic energy of color and marks playan important role in building up layers that functionto create an encompassing, enveloping field andbewildering space. I use the tangible qualitiesof mark-making and surfaces to evoke orpo... [more]
