The National Gallery’s summer exhibition Making Colour guides the audience through the spectrum of materials used throughout history to create artists’ pigment—from blues, through reds and oranges, to purples. Each room focuses on a specific colour and the multiple materials used to make it over time, from early earth pigments, through lakes (dyes made into pigment) to the new artificial coal tar derived pigments created around the time of the Impressionists. Wassily Kandinsky, Kasimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian at K20 Grabbeplatz April 5th, 2014 - July 6th, 2014

Granted, I’m into the canon, and furthermore, the exhibiti... [more]

Piet Mondrian at Centre Pompidou December 1st, 2010 - March 21st, 2011

Tonight, I went to see Mondrian and de Stijl at the Centre Pompidou, and I nearly cried. I didn’t particularly like the hanging of many of Mondrian’s greatest paintings that are on display here. Although this huge exhibition did, at times, gesture in the right direction, in true Centre Pompidou style, there was way too much going on, and to be seen properly it would need at least three full days.
