Artist's Statement

My work attempts to recreate that childhood moment of wonder and awe of looking through a microscope for the first time and marvelling at the intricacy and complexity of the natural world. Inspired by scientific illustration and model making I construct half real, half imagined organic forms that seek to convey the fragility and delicacy of nature and also, paradoxically, its strength, power and durability. Hand cutting the sculptures from layer upon layer of paper in a process which is slow and meditative, I seek to uncover the secret architecture of natural forms which I then use to construct chimerical imaginary organisms both familiar and yet other, which remind us of the incredible variety of the natural world, as well as its strangeness.
