In my work, I follow the inspired thought about space, forms, dimensions and color themes. My interest in dynamic structures in nature has been my focus in the last decade, either created as allegorical, representational, or entirely abstract works in concept. I explore the imagery of primordial life and biomorphic forms, metaphorically related to the human physical structure. I am searching for the connections centered on myth, and symbols, relating to past and future, to open the undercurrent motives of our existence. I often draw inspiration from the references in my sketchbook, referring to history, science, and archaeology, and apply them in juxtaposition to contemporary subjects. I allow myself to be guided by forthcoming intuitions by working in various media, mostly in acrylic, oil, mixed media, photography and new media, as an experimental form. Life experiences, studies of classical music, psychology, and ancient cultures are an additional supply of material I use as a tool support. The curiosity and wonder in the process of creativity, stimulated by the individual views and notions, is the effective motivation for my work. New values created, I continue to discover the art the essence of life and living

Jarmila Kostliva's work explores abstract and subconscious scenery as motifs to describe the idea of imaginary reality. Using symbolic narratives and allegorical images as patterns, Kostliva creates meditative environments, which suggest the expansion of art and life's reality as dialog. With the conceptual approach, she is approaching a wide scale of subjects in a multilayered way. Her work doesn’t reference recognizable forms. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. Her works isolate biological elements or objects. By doing so, new sequences are created which reveal an inseparable relationship between abstract and intellectual.

Born in Prague, she has always been a participant of performing as well as fine arts. Music, dramatic arts, dance, and cinema are all influences that imbue her work with personal insights and drama. Trained as a ballet dancer, performing in theater in her native Prague, followed by tours in North and South America, became a personal collection of experiences.

She settled in Montreal and was attending independent studies in sculpture at Concordia University. After several engagements with dance companies in Canada and Germany, she was ready for her "come back", to seriously pursue her former passion of painting. Later, she moved to Vancouver, BC and was fully involved with her work in the studio, and in producing architectural renderings with the husband's architectural firm. Influenced by studies of old masters of Italian Renaissance, and drawing from a variety of cultural backgrounds of ancient history, the experience became primal motivation and inspiration for most of her earliest work. She graduated from College of Fine and Applied Arts in the Czech Republic before she accomplished her professional career in dance. Come back to her former activities in visual arts, was an artistic “call” for fulfillment. Her work was exhibited in Galleries in Europe, USA, and Canada, winning her several international awards. She continues to develop her work in new concepts, in the perception of new contemporary ideas, forms, and techniques. She currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC.
