I was born in a small village in Sancti Spiritus, CUBA, as were my parents, and their parents. In November 1969, my parents and I boarded the Freedom Flight to Miami, Florida – I was nearing my fourth birthday. The Freedom Flights represented the largest and longest resettlement program of political refugees ever sponsored by the U.S. government, offering an escape from Fidel Castro's Cuba to 450,000 people.  We arrived at the Freedom Tower, where teams of translators, doctors and volunteers waited to provide food, medical care and financial support. We spent a few days in detention, we were eventually reunited with the rest of our family in Union City, New Jersey.

Growing up in Union City, just twenty minutes from New York City, the art capital of the world, gave me access and opportunity to explore some of the best museums and galleries on the east coast. My passion for photography gave birth. I was given my first 35mm camera, a Pentax ME Super in high school. I loved doing street photography. After class, I'd spend the afternoons developing my film and prints at the school lab. Eventually, I set up my personal mini-darkroom in our bathroom at home.

I received my B.F.A. degree in Graphic Design in 1988 from Kean College, now Kean University. Since graduation, I have worked for several prominent advertising and marketing agencies in New York City and New Jersey.

In the late Summer of 2010, I was looking for an alternative medium to photography. I developed an interest in scanography - the art of creating pictures with a scanner. I like to use a visual grammar employing surrealistic images to evoke memories and emotions important for my formation as a person and artist. My early memories of Cuba lie at the basis of my subject matter. I work mostly with found objects. The selected objects that I use are my nouns, verbs and adjectives that guide me in a sort of storytelling route to recovery of a memory. The scanner is an endless source of challenges that I find intriguing. I enjoy experimenting with light, movement, liquids, depth of field, colors and layers. Every so often, I find myself haunting thrift stores and garage sales for objects that will evoke and express a certain spirit that would be otherwise elusive.
