Statement

CLEVELAND DEAN

Artist Statement

There is a conversation that needs to become realized. Society has been changed irreversibly.  The masses attention span has become shorter than their devotion to truly affect change. The psychology of interaction has shifted. Reassurance of an individual’s thought has been compromised. While some innovate most are unknowingly lulled into a state of unawareness even with the overabundance of information available. Where are we in this equation? What do we see in general? Who have we become?

The work of multi-disciplined, self-taught, visual artist Cleveland Dean exists to address this quandary in abstract and conceptual ways speaking to that which is the now and how we relate, what our thought process has become and our place in this new inclusion yet isolation based world. Cleveland Dean pulls from various elements and life experience and has formed an individual style that reflects his vision and his studies of philosophy, sociology, psychology as well as acting as a voyeur of humanity. The centered ideology is to evoke individual thought for the viewer, as opposed to being conditioned to what one should think and see, and how such resonates into other aspects of their lives.

“My goal is to simply recondition people to think, adhere to knowledge and broaden their experience. In our society of the now, we are inundated with so much information that it makes it virtually impossible to pay attention to and gain expertise in any of it. In such, many of our civil liberties are being diminished right before our eyes and we submit. The time to awaken from this degradation of intellect is now.”

Primarily Cleveland Dean's work finds creation via painting, mixed media, installation, video, sculpture and photography.
