at La Biennale di Venezia (Venice Biennale) August 29th, 2012 - November 25th, 2012

Director David Chipperfield stands at the whitewashed entranceway to the Arsenale on the opening day of his Common Ground biennale, pink-faced among a swarm of onlookers. He’s exclaiming in front of a videocamera: “We’re not like artists! The primary material of architects is our buildings – we can’t hang buildings on the wall.” Maybe they don’t go on the wall, but where do the buildings go at the Architecture Biennale? It’s a question that no one, least of all Chipperfield, seems able to... [more]
Indian Summer   Pick-button-f22fa879042524f5c7b8d2278b2983b8
Cynthia Girard, Pontus Lindvall at SEPTEMBER July 21st, 2012 - September 1st, 2012
Posted 8/20/12
While most Berlin galleries are closed for the last month of summer, the ones that stay open have different ways of dealing with August’s meandering energy. Berlin isn’t exactly lazy in the summer, it’s just that the city can feel buoyed by momentum rather than ambition. September Gallery’s current show -- which ends on September first -- resists the lull. The exhibition creates an autonomous, luminous vitality that feels like an extra month of sun, an Indian summer. Canadian artist Cynthia... [more]

As part of Haus der Kulturen der Welt’s Berlin Documentary Forum last month, writer and theorist Sylvère Lotringer presented a three-part lecture series called Framing Death, examining changing representations of death in contemporary culture. In the third presentation, certainly the most ambitious and expansive of the series, Lotringer screened Wim Wenders and Nicholas Ray’s 1980 film Lightning Over Water. The screening was interspersed with recordings of interviews Lotringer did himself with... [more]
In 2011, Art Basel’s selection committee rejected three prominent Berlin galleries from the fair: Eigen+ Art, Giti Nourbakhsch and Mehdi Chouakri. This triggered claims that their rejection was the fault of an extremely Berlin-heavy selection committee. Suspicion was that the three Berlin-based gallerists on the committee had denied entry to their local competitors. According to an article by Nicolai Hartvig in Artinfo France, Eigen + Art’s Gerd Harry Lybke went as far as to reference the Stasi... [more]
Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster   Pick-button-f22fa879042524f5c7b8d2278b2983b8
Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster at Esther Schipper April 21st, 2012 - May 19th, 2012

French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster’s current exhibition at Esther Schipper Gallery, Return to Noreturn, revisits and rewrites her 2008-2009 exhibition TH.2058 at the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. Return to Noreturn hovers between documentation and fiction, its semi-narrative arc held together by two videos filmed at the Tate during the last week of her show there. Though the videos are records of the previous exhibition, they deliberately stage a new story, cycling between past and future... [more]

The floorplan of MMX´s exhibition space, which winds around the entire ground floor of an old building on Linienstr., allows for a sense of discovery. The layout of the space, as well as its temporary nature (it lasts for only one year) demand a certain amount of creative experimentation and energy from the work and its curation. The venue´s current exhibition takes full advantage of these possibilities. None of the work feels precious or labored over, and it is curated with a light touch... [more]
