Things taken out of context can be seen as no-things. No longer the same. Engaging thinking and non-thinking.
In this work, re-purposed switch plates form a grid-like structure and offer a sense of classical repose. They also serve as a foundation for the intuitive and free application of color, forms and content. I am interested in minimal concerns as well as painterly sensibilities.
I am also exploring art’s relationship to technology, obsolescence and waste, shifting perspectives, attention and impermanence.
Re-purposed objects never lose traces of their specific histories. At the same time, they embody open-ended possibilities of perception and interpretation.
Laurie Katz Yehia is a painter and installation artist in Los Angeles, and serves as a Commissioner on the Santa Monica Arts Commission. She studied drawing, painting and ceramics at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before focusing on printmaking with Nathan Oliviera as an art major at Stanford University and receiving her B.A. with Honors in Art from Wesleyan University. Yehia has studied painting with Tom Wudl in the arts district of Los Angeles since 2007. Her diverse experiences as artist, lawyer, leadership consultant, mother and public education advocate inform her art. Yehia's work has been exhibited in solo and group shows, selected for awards on ARTslant.com and included in International Contemporary Artists Vol VIII (Lemonidou and Antoniadou, curators, 2014). She has co-curated with Tressa Miller and Tom Wudl exhibitions at ArtShare LA, the studioeleven gallery in Maker City LA, the Colburn School in Los Angeles, and The Ebell of Los Angeles.
