Dark Alley Dolls/ Veronika Lozovaya

My name is Veronika Lozovaya, I design and create Dark Alley Cats and Gothic ball jointed and OOAK art dolls.

I was born in1982, in Russia, where I grew up and lived most of my life. My passion for art came at an early age. I have always been making things, painting, drawing and sewing for as long as I can remember.
I obtained master’s degree in Philology in 2004 and worked as an interpreter for 5 years. In 2010 I immigrated to Washington USA, where my family and I currently reside.

I discovered dolls as a form of art in 2011 and they became a perfect creativity outlet for me. Art doll is a multi-medium three-dimensionalI object and the most interactive form of visual arts. Constructing a doll demands a wide range of skills, such as sculpting, mold making, painting, designing costumes, sewing, and needle felting. It gives me the opportunity to work with a variety of materials, like paper clay, polymer clay, paints and pastels, fabric, leather, mohair and even wood. I would never be completely satisfied confined in only one medium.

I describe my style as Gothic. I show the beauty of sadness and destruction via the use of faded gloomy colors in my work.
For the most part, Dark Alley Dolls are little children with large disproportionate heads, creepy yet innocent faces; adorably sweet, yet dark and, somewhat, disturbing. They are rather simple in their design and not heavily detailed. I never strive to create a complicated piece that looks perfect in every way, but one that tells a story and makes you feel.
Dark Alley Dolls are entirely inspired by my own childhood experiences.

I was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease In 2013. There are days when I can’t get out of bed due to pain and overpowering fatigue. Making dolls and connecting with doll artists online makes me feel less isolated and depressed.
I am a shy introvert and have a tough time showing vulnerability. Art allows me to open up and express my deepest fears and insecurities.

I like to challenge myself as an artist. My skills are continuously growing. I am curious to see how my work evolves over time.

I am grateful to have my dolls find homes all across the globe.

Thank you for your interest in my work!
