Statement

Artist's Statement

As a kind of third culture kid—an artist raised by mathematicians—I know what it’s like to have a frame of reference at odds with my own perspective. But no one’s view of the world is absolute because we all unconsciously translate what we know into something we can understand. We seek pattern. And when we cannot easily organize our experiences into manageable chaos, we engineer seamless models that seduce us into accepting their flaws.

My work focuses on the connections and assumptions we make within an imposed structure and how we develop theories based on imperfect information. I use geometric shapes and my own number representation system to abstract and reanimate numerical data; I use form and composition to explore the space between what we know and what we don’t know. I mix a full spectrum (including black) from just three hues—red, yellow, blue—to underline the limitations.

A variation on Venn’s diagrams, each painting reveals the relationship among ostensibly disparate components by intersecting data, physical object, and color. A book cipher embeds a fourth layer, which then poses the question that engages and enchants us: Are the connections real or contrived? Perhaps, I have simply disarranged what has already been arranged.

About the Artist

Leslie Love Stone is a conceptual painter who lives and works in Southern California. A former banking executive and native South Carolinian, Leslie is a graduate of Claremont Graduate University’s prestigious MFA program and recipient of the Karl and Beverly Benjamin Fellowship in Art. She received her MBA from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, with concentrations in marketing and international business, and her bachelor of science degree in finance and economics from the University of Nevada, Reno. She also holds a degree in graphic design from Cuesta College. Leslie is a member of Mensa.
