Liz Rosenfeld is a Berlin-based artist utilizing disciplines of film, video and live performance, to convey a sense of past and future histories. Rosenfeld is invested in concepts of how history is experienced,  lived and remembered, as well as how and where we identify ourselves with in/ out community and social poly- relationality configurations.

In 2005, Rosenfeld directed “Untitled (Dyketactics Revisited,)” a re-enactment of experimental filmmaker Barbara Hammer’s classic film Dyketactics from 1974. This was extremely well received and continues to screen internationally.

Rosenfeld recently just finished her most prolific film project to date, “ The Surface Tension Series,” Comprised of three short experimental films tracking the rise and fall of the Weimar period in Berlin. “The Surface Tension Series” proposes experiences of this time through the eyes of Frida Kahlo & Anita Berber, Hannah Höch, and Leni Reifenstahl & Eva Braun, women who were well known for their artistic and political affiliations. While experimenting with anachronistic modes of storytelling, these short films play with queering the strategies of factual history- making. Rosenfeld plays with history through her choice of casting her friends as these characters, and in many ways imagining them as present day vessels of this historical moment. The choice to enact stories, relationships and experiences that “may” have happened, suggest that history is not just represented through a hegemonic dominant discourse, but rather, history may be produced through the untold intimate moments of relationships. These films pose questions concerning the usefulness of nostalgia, history as lived experience and the way in which political and creative economies unfold. Frida & Anita, the first film in this series, screened at Rivington Place, The Tate Modern, and The British Film Institute. The entire Surface Tension Trilogy will have a World Premiere at The Barbican in London and German Premiere at The German Historical Museum in Berlin in late 2015.

Rosenfeld is part of the Berlin based film production collective nowMomentnow. nowMomentnow is committed to the creation of an alterative feminist- led economy of production and art making, which relies on exchange, skill sharing and creative funding structures. Rosenfeld is also one of the founding members of the food- performance group foodGASM, a satellite project of nowMomentnow. foodGASM creates live performances that incorporate food, art and film, specifically with the intention of looking at the politics of labor, artist as worker, and collective feasting as revolutionary action.

Rosenfeld has collaborated with Swedish Feminist Porn Film Director Marit Östberg and the Swedish electro- pop band, The Knife. Rosenfeld’s work has been screened and performed at venues including The Barbican, The German Historical Musuem, The Tate Modern, The Hayward Gallery, The C/O Gallery, The Kunst Haus Dresden, The Hebbel am Ufer Theater, The British Film Institute, The Victoria & Albert Museum, The Hammer Museum, The Kitchen, and Rivington Place. She graduated from Hampshire College in 1998 with a BA in New Media.  She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005, followed by a Masters in Performance Studies from Tisch School of The Arts at New York University in 2007.
