Currently I am working on two bodies of work. One is based on my interest in line. I use line and organic shapes to create abstract geometric drawings with ink, gouache, and flocking fibers. In addition to the drawings I also use wood to create sculptures created out of line that hang on the wall. The resulting pieces are rooted in mapmaking, material relationships, and dimensional investigation. The use of various styles of line allows me to explore my fascination with the in-between which creates a dialogue between the work, the wall, and the space around them. I am interested in the relationship between the viewer and the space they must occupy to experience the work, where two-dimensional stops and three-dimensional starts, and how the object or picture plane can be altered to confuse or obstruct the traditional viewing experience.
The second body of work is based on the idea of a chronotope or “time-space.” I use ink, various types of paint, and wood to produce drawings and paintings based on myself and stories of my past. The chronotope is rooted in how I can execute the concept of time thickening and becoming artistically visible. To help visualize this concept I am also considering how various dimensions and our choices and personality effect the way we see and interpret an image.
I want to use these ideas as a point of departure that eventually yield objects and images that are at once familiar and strange reconfigurations of their sources. The resulting works will play off the tension that arises from both improvised and intentional integrations and clashes of diverse materials.
