Statement

Multimedia performance and music artist CHOKRA harnesses rhymes, light, pyrotechnics, video, scents, vivid powders, traditional ceremonial practices and attire, and gender-bending posturing to present performances full of joy—and his queer-spirited challenge to the status quo. Originally from the United Arab Emirates, where his performances were banned, he moved to New York to find freedom to pursue his work.

CHOKRA’s work has been seen at MoMA, P.S.1, Saatchi Gallery, The Watermill Center, New Museum, Kumu Art Museum, Kunstmuseum, Centre Pompidou, Caixa Forum Museum, Drawing Center, Casoria Contemporary Art Museum, Scope Art, Art Basel and appears in numerous prestigious collections worldwide.
