I paint nude men. Sometimes I paint nude men with women. People all react differently to the male nude. It pleases me when the reaction is positive. I don't paint porn. I paint beauty. I am often introduced as "This is Joan, she paints nude men". It seems to be shocking to paint the male penis. The female penis, though, the clitoris, is allowed. They are both simply a part of the body. A beautiful part that all of us are curious about, but don't allow ourselves to look.
For the last eight years I have been going to nude beaches in Hawaii, meeting and painting fellow nudists. Like myself, they feel comfortable going nude. We feel connected to the natural beauty of Hawaii. There, beauty surrounds us...the churning sea, the sandy beaches, strings of clouds, sunrise and sunsets. It is there, in Hawaii, that I sketch the beautiful people: the travelers, the hippies and the locals.
I hope you will enjoy seeing paintings of some extraordinary and ordinary friends, both men and women. People who trust me to immortalize them. People with whom I have shared truth and beauty and the ocean....my friends of Aloha.
