Evoking the methodological organization of natural structures, Tara Donovan’s immense sculptures both astound and appear eerily familiar. Everyday objects like pencils, plastic straws, and scotch tape are stacked, layered, or clustered to create fluid, sinuous installations.  Whether hanging from the ceiling, attached to the walls, or sprouting up from the floorboards, Donovan’s organic constructions create an otherworldly atmosphere out of compulsive repetition. I loved Tara Donovan’s Haze, the 2003 installation at Ace Gallery composed entirely of drinking straws to form an organic, alien wall terrain that enveloped the space. I also loved her last show at Pace in 2006 that employed zillions of plastic cups to create an otherworldly lunar street view.
