These works are the product of my passion for imagery distilled from the botanic, geographic and aquatic realms. Photography is my medium but beyond just capturing split-seconds in time I am now creating organic images that are more structural and intricate.
The MANDALA series mimics the complex dichotomy found in flora. They are extrapolated from my macroflora images and are evolutionary - ' a gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better form.' The word 'Mandala' is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit. Loosely translated to mean "circle" a Mandala is far more than a simple shape. It represents wholeness and is seen as a model for the organizational structure of life itself.
The MACROFLORA series are created as from a bee's point of view. An exploration of the beautiful inner realm of the botanica with minute detail layered and blended to reveal the third dimension of depth.
The AQUA series is constructed in pristine H2O. Crisp light speculars refracting on chrome orbs, morphing and floating as transparents on a clear canvas – AIR,WATER, SUN and SKY
Born in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand I grew up surfing and riding my bike through the vineyards of the Tukituki valley. My introduction to floral art was botanic illustration while studying Botany, Zoology and Geography at the University of Auckland.
Relocating to Australia I trained for five years with master photographers and then began shooting for a variety of clients: - American Express, Australian Tourism, Sydney 2000 Olympic Org, H.M. Endeavour Society, Ogilvy & Mather, Toyota, Smirnoff, Guinness,PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Asahi Japan, National Geographic Traveler and World, Conde Nast Traveler, Garuda, JAL, Qantas,Air NZ, Conde Nast Vogue Living,Harpers Bazaar, ADAC Germany, World Expeditions and the Pacific Arts festival, .
I also documented summer at Sydney's Bondi Beach and this was published as a book titled ' A Summer Mosaic'. During this time I was awarded a National Geographic internship and an ABC scholarship at the Eddie Adams workshop in The Catskills New York state.
Coming full circle I have rediscovered my roots in botany and now live in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand with my wife and two young daughters. My garden and orchard are now my studio and a fine source of subject matter.
