Ellie Perla was born in Romania, of German and Romanian descent, near the city of Temeschburg or Timisoara, and considers herself a cross-cultured world citizen infatuated with foreign lands.  In 1986 Ellie fell in love with the Miami weather and lack of proper grammar, and decided that this would be her final destination.   Both Ellie’s mother and grandmother were painters.  Her grandmother gave her the first set of oil paints at the age of seven.

“I embarked on a ferocious mission to learn to draw and paint on my own. My teachers were museums and library books.  I drew a lot, stared at light and shadows for hours, copied oil paintings, and I sold the copies to buy more paint.  There is not much left to show from these years, but the love of art.”

Moving from country to country, Ellie searched for the best place to raise her two daughters.  Art took second place.  But when she reached her final destination, she returned to the drawing board.  “First I timidly drew in black and white, then an explosion of colors followed.  Meanwhile, I also learned basic photography.”

In regards to her artistic motives, Ellie explains: "Our subconscious has all the necessary elements that make us creative; each uncertainty, each identity doubt, has already been answered in the recesses of our brain.  I don’t feel the necessity of analyzing, constructing and deconstructing what I do since it is all already there, stashed away like our family heirlooms in an old storage space.  I just hold the door open. My art is me, a simple thought.  Me, as I navigate through life from pain to peace, from black to lavender.”

Regarding the purpose of her art, Ellie adds: “In my youth spent behind the iron curtain, we all dreamed big.  We wanted to become rocket scientists, doctors, biologists, architects or nuclear physicists.  It is no different today. Youth is hopeful but vulnerable.  As a society we are all responsible for the outcome of each individual's life.  As a female artist, I feel responsible to share something positive.  It is no different from being a parent.”

Ellie’s drawings and paintings are colorful and intricate windows into her imagination, a place where east meets west, where feelings are alive and have shapes, hues and textures. A place of ultimate pleasure, the pleasure of art.

Ellie Perla lives and works in Miami Beach as owner and president of LatinEPR, a public relations agency.  An avid photographer, Ellie Perla has taken over 25,000 travel 3-D photographs, and a large portfolio of infrared photography.  Her travel and lifestyle images have been published over the years in hundreds of international magazines.  Ellie is also an illustrator and writer of fairy tales.  Ellie Perla is partner and artist in residence at ATELIER 1022 Gallery in Wynwood, Miami, at 450 NW 27th Street, Second Level, along side of her daughters Carola Perla, an acknowledged novelist and creator of visual poetry, and Susi Perla, a fine art photographer.
