“Everybody is an artist.”—Joseph Beuys

“And that’s what it’s all about.”—Bob Ross

What does it mean to believe that, as many of our parents told us as children, “you can be anything you want to be if you just work hard enough?” And what exactly is hard enough in world increasingly filled with instant access to forgettable information? How can an onslaught of images and information lead to the breakdown of order to offer up new visions of time, labor, leisure, and identity? Caught in the infernal struggle between understanding myself as an artist and an Artist or what the hell that even means. I probe and prod accepted hierarchies, norms, distinctions and other mechanisms we use to attain some sense of order. I use humor to explore the Sisyphean task of controlling our epistemological and existential experience in a world with growing grey areas and fuzzier lines.  I aim to explore the new geography from an often fractured and satirical vantage point. By utilizing populist forms and language that would typically be more in line with what has been deemed craft, lowbrow, or kitsch the work engages in Pierre Bourdieu’s argument that taste acts as a form of cultural dominance. In the end, what is the difference between my studio and the living room of a Sunday painter?
